Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Commits to Three Decades of Continuity

OperaWire

The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center has extended the contracts of co-artistic directors David Finckel and Wu Han through 2032. This extension ensures nearly three decades of continuity for the organization, a duration comparable to the legendary tenures of the analog recording era, such as the Beaux Arts Trio or the Juilliard String Quartet’s prime years. While such stability provides the financial security necessary for high-tier touring, the challenge remains the evolution of the chamber music (instrumental music played by a small ensemble, with one player to each part) canon. The Society’s recent focus has prioritized the established excellence of a resident roster over the radical programming shifts seen at festivals like Marlboro. To avoid institutional stasis, the 2028-2032 term must demonstrate that administrative continuity can facilitate, rather than preclude, the commissioning of works that challenge the mid-century aesthetic consensus.
