GEMA Face Criticism Over E-Musik Reform Simulations
Neue Musikzeitung (NMZ)
The advocacy group FEM+ has launched a formal challenge to GEMA’s income simulations regarding the proposed E-Musik (art music, as opposed to popular or light music) reform. The group alleges that the current distribution key (the formula used to allocate royalty payments among rights holders) systematically obscures the real losses that contemporary composers will face under the new system. This controversy highlights the friction between the commercial interests of large-scale music licensing and the precarious economics of new composition. While GEMA positions the reform as a modernization, the FEM+ critique suggests it may actually accelerate the financial marginalization of composers working outside the commercial mainstream. The dispute is a diagnostic of the structural instability inherent in any royalty system that attempts to bridge the gap between popular hits and avant-garde chamber music.
