Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden and the Tölzer Choral Pedagogy

Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden, who founded the Tölzer Knabenchor in 1956, has died at 88. He dismantled the hegemony of the ethereal English choral aesthetic, replacing it with a technically rigorous, chest-voice production that restored the visceral impact of the High Baroque. This was a pedagogy of muscle and breath, tailored for the demanding counterpoint of the Score on IMSLP. His collaboration with Nikolaus Harnoncourt in the 1970s remains the definitive document of this approach, proving that the boy soprano is capable of a sophisticated, adult musicality.
