German Music Directors Protest GEMA Revenue Reform
Neue Musikzeitung (NMZ)
German Music Directors and Chief Conductors have issued a formal protest against GEMA’s proposed revenue reforms, which threaten the funding of E-Musik (shorthand for Ernste Musik, meaning 'serious' or classical music). The reform targets the specific financial ecosystem that supports complex orchestral and chamber repertoire, potentially favoring commercially driven genres at the expense of high-art funding models. Historically, the German model has relied on the cross-subsidization of avant-garde and symphonic works through broader copyright revenues. By hollowing out this mechanism, GEMA risks dismantling the structural support for the very works that define the German musical tradition. The protest from the GMD-Konferenz indicates that the damage to regional theaters and orchestras would be immediate, prioritizing short-term administrative efficiency over long-term cultural preservation.
