Kassel’s Zornfried confronts the political through musical theater
Neue Musikzeitung (NMZ)
The premiere of Zornfried at Staatstheater Kassel attempts to bridge the gap between topical political discourse and the operatic stage. Written by Jörg-Uwe Albig and composed by Philipp Krebs, the work examines the psychological mechanisms of contemporary populist movements. While the libretto is overtly political, the work’s success rests on Krebs’s ability to anchor the narrative in a compelling musical structure. The production serves as a diagnostic for the "relevant" opera: does the music illuminate the ideology, or merely decorate it? In the 1920s, the Zeitoper flourished by using the vernacular of jazz and dance music to critique society. Zornfried’s longevity will depend on whether its score provides a similar aesthetic weight to its immediate political concerns, transcending the topicality of its libretto.
