Regional Authorities Dissolve Vittoria Choir after 39 Years

Pizzicato

The regional council’s dissolution of the Vittoria Regional Choir of Île-de-France terminates a thirty-nine-year pillar of décentralisation (the policy of distributing cultural resources outside the capital). Founded in 1987 under Michel Piquemal, the ensemble was a rare example of a professional-standard choir integrated into the regional pedagogical landscape. This closure follows a pattern seen in the 2010s with the reduction of subsidies for regional maîtrises (specialized choral schools) across France. The loss of the Vittoria ensemble removes the primary vehicle for performing the grand motet (a large-scale sacred work for soloists, choir, and orchestra) repertoire in the region, leaving a structural gap in the vocal education pipeline. It is a failure of institutional continuity, not artistic quality, leaving the preservation of this French vocal tradition to the precariousness of the private sector.
