Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Mechanics of the Concert Siegfried
Crescendo Magazine
Yannick Nézet-Séguin recently conducted a concert performance of Wagner’s 'Siegfried' at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. By removing the orchestra from the pit, Nézet-Séguin foregrounded the work’s internal motivic development, particularly in the forest scenes. The woodwind obbligato (an essential instrumental part that cannot be omitted) was granted a prominence rarely heard in staged productions. Score on IMSLP. The performance demonstrates that the dramatic arc of the Ring is sustained by the score’s structural integrity rather than theatrical staging.
