Brett Dean Appointed Composer-in-Residence at the Berlin Philharmonic
The Strad
The Berlin Philharmonic has named Australian composer Brett Dean as its composer-in-residence for the upcoming season. This appointment continues the tradition of the Karajan era’s commitment to living composers, though the role has transitioned from mere commission-recipient to an active participant in the orchestra’s programming logic. Dean’s background as a violist in the orchestra for fifteen years provides a specific pedagogical lineage (the line of descent from a teacher to a pupil) to his writing for the ensemble. His sound world, characterized by microtonality (the use of intervals smaller than a semitone), will be integrated into the orchestra's core subscription series, testing the ensemble's ability to maintain its signature lushness while executing highly specific contemporary techniques.
