Jerusalem Quartet Replaces Long-Serving Violist
Slippedisc
The Jerusalem Quartet has announced that Ori Kam will succeed Amihai Grosz as the ensemble's violist. Personnel changes in established string quartets are high-risk institutional maneuvers, as the shared intonation) (the accuracy of pitch in playing or singing) is developed over decades of collaborative work. Grosz, who left to become principal viola of the Berlin Philharmonic, leaves a gap in the ensemble’s core mid-range texture. Kam’s integration will require a recalibration of the group’s collective vibrato (a rapid, slight variation in pitch in singing or playing some instruments, producing a stronger or richer tone) to maintain their characteristic intensity and warmth. The transition will be audited by the quartet's upcoming Schubert cycle.
