Messiaen’s Turangal la-Symphonie Suffers from Visual Interference

Bachtrack

The Royal Philharmonic’s performance of Messiaen’s Turangalila-Symphonie was hindered by a visual production that created a sensory imbalance. The ondes Martenot (an early electronic instrument with a sliding, haunting timbre), essential for the work’s iridescent textures, was frequently lost behind multimedia elements. Messiaen’s orchestration is inherently self-sufficient; the attempt to enhance it with external filmic limitations only serves to obscure the work’s intricate rhythmic structures. The failure lies in an institutional lack of trust in the music’s own capacity to generate a total sound-world through purely acoustic and electronic means.
