Ruth Slenczynska’s death at 101 severs the final pedagogical link to Sergei Rachmaninov. As a child prodigy who received lessons from the composer, her performance practice was rooted in a late-Romantic aesthetic that prioritized agogics (the use of accentuation and tempo variations to shape a musical phrase) over the metronomic precision of the competition era.
