AI and the Digital Singspiel in Gelsenkirchen

Concerti

The use of AI-generated scenery in Gelsenkirchen’s Die Zauberflöte Score on IMSLP attempts to modernize Mozart’s singspiel (a form of German light opera with spoken dialogue). While the technology provides a novel visual layer, it highlights the struggle to reconcile 18th-century dramatic structures with digital aesthetics. Historically, the 1791 production was the height of stagecraft; today’s AI is the digital equivalent of Schikaneder’s trapdoors. The diagnostic question is whether these tools expand the listener's understanding or merely provide a distraction from the vocal demands. The success of the production depends on whether the technology serves the music's inherent symbolism or merely functions as a substitute for a traditional set budget.
