Institutional Identity and the Female Composer

The Metropolitan Opera’s slate of female conductors and composers marks an attempt to modernize programming logic. However, the failure in such initiatives lies in framing the artist through demographic criteria rather than the tessitura (the range within which most notes of a vocal part fall) of their work. When gender becomes the primary marketing tool, specific musical judgment risks being obscured.
