ResMusica

The Stuttgart Opera’s new Dialogues des Carmélites is a study in the limits of Regietheater (a style of opera production where the director's concept takes precedence over the original staging instructions). While the production succeeds in highlighting the political vulnerability of the sisters, it often does so by obscuring the spiritual arc that drives the music toward its final Salve Regina. This friction identifies a growing trend in European opera where the director’s conceptual agenda is treated as an autonomous layer, sometimes operating in direct opposition to the internal logic of the score.
