The death of Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden at age 88 concludes a formative chapter for the Tölzer Knabenchor (a traditional boys' choir common in German-speaking lands). His rigorous approach to Stimmbildung (the systematic training and development of the singing voice) defined the vocal profile of the early period-instrument movement. Through his collaborations with Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Schmidt-Gaden proved that the clarity and straight-tone of a boy soprano was the necessary acoustic counterpart to the gut strings of the Concentus Musicus Wien. His legacy is not merely the recordings, but the pedagogical mechanism that allowed the Tölzer choir to maintain its distinctive, focused sound for over six decades.
